I called this post Infection Pregnant Yeast because it was 3 topics that are relevant to this site. Yeast Infections when you’re pregnant.

There are many tips on yeast infections during pregnancy, but here we will focus mainly on causes.  Pregnancy can be a very tough time on a woman; if you have “Infection Pregnant Yeast” problems, such as vaginal candidiasis or something similar, this can make things so much more difficult. In many cases, pregnant women cannot be given anti-fungals because they may harm the developing child. This means that prevention through proper hygiene then, is often the best course of action.

General Information

Basically a yeast infection is an overgrowth of the fungus known as Candida. This fungus is present in the body at all times, especially the vaginal canal, and won’t cause problems under normal conditions. Problems begin when the biochemical balance in the body is put “out of whack” and the fungus can then begin overgrowing.

This overgrowth can lead to many physical symptoms including but not limited to, rash, discharge, and foul odor.

Eating Habits

One of the causes of Infection Pregnant Yeast problems is contained within your diet. The candida fungus, like many other fungi, consumes large amounts of sugar to sustain itself and begin a fermentation process. So logically, the best thing to do in these situations is to try and limit your intake of starches and sugars. Focus less on the carbs, and maintain your hygiene and you’ll notice a marked improvement in your symptoms.

Estrogen Levels

Continuous fluctuations in the hormone Estrogen can cause Infection Pregnant Yeast problems. Estrogen levels are always changing during a pregnancy, and this rapid changing of internal biochemistry can allow your yeast/candida to grow out of control. Your Estrogen is usually very high during pregnancy and your body produces more Glycogen as a result. It has been found that glycogen helps candida to not only grow, but to increase its ability to adhere to the surface lining of the vaginal canal. The best way of combating this aspect of potential yeast overgrowth is, again, good hygiene.

Antibiotics

Another cause of Infection Pregnant Yeast problems are antibiotics. Yeast overgrowth is usually prevented by the good bacteria in your body, keeping them in check. Once you begin taking a course of antibiotics for some ailment of some kind, however, that’s when problems arise. The bad bacteria that were causing the ailment will be killed by your antibiotics, but unfortunately this will lead to the deaths of the good yeast fighting bacteria as well. With no bacteria to keep the yeast in check, it overgrows and you get a “yeast infection”.

Sexual Intercourse

Sexual intercourse can be healthy during a pregnancy, and a good idea to help the birthing process etc. The problem arises however with the fact that the male genital region can carry yeast as well. During penetration, the yeast clinging to the male’s genitals can slough off and enter the woman’s vagina. Once in the warm and moist environment they can, like all fungi, begin rapidly overgrowing. This underlines yet again how important hygiene is in prevention of yeast overgrowth, not only in yourself but in any sexual partners you may have while you’re pregnant.
